We respond with a variety of equipment and personnel that are
equipped and trained to bring all of the different type of fires that would be
experienced in the Village
of Sheffield under
control. Our fleet of Fire Apparatus is equipped with copious amounts of water,
as well as other means of suppression including different types of foam,
extinguishers, and many other fire suppression materials. Feel free to stop by
the Sheffield Village Fire Department to view and learn more about our
suppression methods, or give us a call and a trained employee can give you an
answer or assist you in finding one.
The State of
Ohio
requires that every fire be investigated by the Fire Department and or the State
of Ohio's Fire
Marshals Office. The Sheffield Village Fire Department has eight investigators
on staff, all trained in fire scene investigation by the Ohio
Fire
Academy.
Please keep in mind, the presence of our investigators and or the State Fire
Marshal's Office does not imply suspicion but is merely a investigation tool to
determine the cause of a fire.
The Sheffield Village Fire Department provides fire prevention
and safety services to all occupancies in
Sheffield
Village.
Our department has 13 state certified
fire safety inspectors. Our goal is to
visit each of the nearly 280 occupancies at least once a year to ensure
compliance with fire safety requirements and the Ohio Fire Code.
When feasible, we try to conduct fire company inspections
which allow on duty fire crews to accompany a fire safety inspector during the
fire inspection.
This allows our firefighters to become familiar with the many businesses
and other establishments in our community.
Many years ago we adopted the KNOX-BOX® Rapid Entry System
which provides to the owners and managers of commercial and public occupancies a
non-destructive emergency access to their buildings and facilities.
In the past we recommended to owners of commercial and public buildings
that installing a KNOX-BOX® provides our department with a means of rapid entry
to their property.
The newly revised Ohio Fire Code now requires that owners of any new
commercial construction must install a KNOX-BOX® type system.
The system is available for residential use also.
If you are interested, call us at 949-6032 for more information or stop by the
fire station to pick up the forms required to submit and purchase your
KNOX-BOX®.
Please note the cost of installing the box will be incurred by the
property owner.
Our fire safety inspectors will gladly visit your home and
provide a fire safety inspection. This is
strictly a courtesy for our residents, as we have no enforcement rights in one
or two family dwellings. We will review with you basic fire prevention practices
and offer suggestions to make your home more fire safe, plus review a fire
escape plan in the event of an emergency at your home.
The concept behind fire prevention is very simple; we are
mainly concerned with occupants of a structure safely evacuating the structure
in the event of emergency and minimizing property damage. Next, we are concerned
with doing all we can to eliminate the start and spread of fire. Finally, the
more we know about your building before an emergency, the better we will be at
abating that emergency.
Very often we
have free smoke detectors and replacement
batteries available at the fire station for those residents who can not afford
to purchase them.
Please
give a call if you need one to ensure we have them available. You do need to
show proof of residence to receive them. We will install new detectors and
replace the batteries in detectors in your home if you are unable to do it
yourself. We however cannot be responsible for any damage that may occur in the
process of these installations and or battery replacements.
Vehicle extrication is accomplished with a variety of equipment and training
within the Fire Department. They include the "Jaws of Life", air bags, and
vehicle stabilization equipment. We provide quick, safe and efficient rescue
services of removal of trapped victims while maintaining advanced life saving
techniques with our paramedics.
Rope
rescue equipment and training for our department allows us to perform a variety
of tactical rescue operations involving the use of rescue rope. Some situations
that may warrant the use of our rope rescue capacities includes victims over a
cliff or trapped on a cliff, a victim who needs to be raised or lowered from a
area, swift water rescue, and firefighting activities.
We also have the capability and equipment to perform ice rescue problems on the
rivers and ponds in Sheffield Village.
The Sheffield
Village Fire Department provides a Paramedic level rescue squad service to all
of the residents and visitors to
Sheffield
Village. The Fire
Department operates two fully equipped rescue squads to provide on scene
treatment and transportation to local emergency rooms. The rescue squads are
part of the Fire Department and are staffed by personnel at the station 24 hours
a day. In the event of multiple victims and or calls we participate in a mutual
aid program with the rest of the Fire Departments in Lorain County.
Every effort has been made to assure timely and professional medical services
under any circumstance.
We provide
emergency transportation to the following hospital emergency rooms: Community
Health Partners in Lorain, Elyria Memorial Medical
Center in Elyria,
Avon Emergency
Care Center
in Avon, and St. John/Westshore Hospital
in Westlake. We will also consider
transporting to other area hospital depending on the nature of the call.
